For this month's auction painting we present "Sunflowers in Bloom" by one of the premier Ukrainian landscape artists of the second half of the twentieth century, Grigory Prokofievich Matesora. Estimated at $3,000 to $4,000 the current bid is just $1,500!

Matsegora had a unique ability to capture people as well as the beautiful landscapes of village life. He painted the countryside with emotion and reverence, always full of truth and integrity. Matsegora captured the gentility, vastness and living breath of the countryside of his native Ukraine.
For Matsegora's collectors and fans, his work with local landscapes provides a special touch--capturing the particular light and landmarks of nature. Finding the local peculiarities and uniqueness of landscapes--became the main genre of his creative work.

In this work Matsegora combines the spontaneity of a one time plein air

Grigoriy Prokofievich Matsegora b. 1934

Honored Artist of Ukraine

Born on September 8, 1934, in the village of Oleyniki, Sakhnovschinsky district, Kharkov region. In 1956, Matsegora graduated from State Art Collage in Kharkov. His teacher was M. Slipchenok. He has been participating in Regional, Republican, All-Union and foreign exhibitions since 1959. He is a member of the Ukrainian Union of Artists since 1970. Matsegora is an Honored Artist of Ukraine, 1994. He received the Order of Merit of the 3rd degree (2009). Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine (1970), National Union of Masters of Folk Art of Ukraine (1990).

His creative credo is a respectful attitude towards Nature and, simultaneously, a free dialogue with it without any tendency to decorate it. Ukrainian villages, faithful love of his countrymen, with whom he survived the difficult years of the Second World War, the hunger in 1947 and tragic years of Stalin, all those factors determined his life and artistic position. The artist's paintings reflect the simple culture of Ukrainian villages with their vividly expressed national features and beautiful countryside.

He taught; in Zaporozhye: head of the art studio at the titanium - magnesium plant (1958-1961); in the partnership of artists (1961-1962), at the art - production plant (1962-1974); Executive Secretary of the organization of the Union of Artists of Ukraine (1974-1975); Co-owner and chairman of the organization of the National Union of Folk Art Masters of Ukraine (1990-2004). Editor, compiler of art albums "Artists of Zaporozhye" (1975) and "Folk Art of Zaporozhye" (2001). Participated in exhibitions: regional, republican, all-union (since 1962).

Personal exhibitions - in Kiev (1965, 1995, 2002, 2008), Zaporozhye (1970, 1977, 1984, 1994), the city of Sakhnovschina (1972), Ternopol, Lviv, Kharkov (2002).

The artist's paintings are exhibited in Museums and in private collections including the Zaporizhzhya Art Museum, the Ternopil Art Museum, the Kharkov Art Museum, the National Art Museum (Kiev), the Vyshgorod Museum of Local Lore (Kiev Region), the National Museum in Lviv, and the Museum of the Ukrainian Community named after T. Shevchenko in Toronto (Canada). He lived and worked in the city of Zaporozhye.
